Satellite Sentinel Project Conceived by Clooney Captures Apparent Bombardment in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains
WASHINGTON – The Satellite Sentinel Project, or SSP, initiated by George Clooney and Enough Project Co-founder John Prendergast, has released a new report which documents an apparent Sudan Armed Forces, or SAF, Antonov in the act of indiscriminately bombing apparent civilian areas in the Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan. The attack occurred on the morning of March 8.
“The Khartoum regime has been caught in the act of bombing their own civilians," said John C. Bradshaw, Executive Director of the Enough Project. “Their campaign of fear against the people of the Nuba Mountains is using tactics that could be considered war crimes. The international community must act to ensure that they stop immediately."
The DigitalGlobe satellite imagery, analyzed by Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, shows plumes of smoke rising from the ground at two locations. An aircraft consistent with an Antonov An-26 Curl can be seen flying 4 kilometers from the apparent bombing site. SAF routinely uses Antonov bombers to target civilians.
The satellite imagery also shows that SAF is engaged in ongoing improvements to the SAF airstrip at Talodi -- the closest airbase to the rebel stronghold in the Kauda Valley. The imagery appears to show that within the past month, SAF has paved the recently lengthened airstrip there, which at 1,800 meters, is now long enough to land an Antonov. Further, the imagery appears to show that SAF has added a helicopter landing pad, or helipad, plus two fortifications at the Talodi airstrip.
Harvard Carr Center for Human Rights Policy Executive Director Charlie Clements, MD, said:
“Indiscriminate attacks, including bombings, of civilians violates international law. Indiscriminate bombings terrorize vulnerable people, even when the bombings kill or wound no one. The Government of Sudan must stop all indiscriminate attacks against civilians.”
