Talodi Plane Crash Imagery

New satellite imagery obtained by DigitalGlobe for the Satellite Sentinel Project, or SSP, confirms that the plane crashed 1.5 kilometers southeast of the SAF airstrip at Talodi. The plane, a 38-year-old Alfa Airlines Antonov An-26-100 (registration number ST-ARL3) missed its first attempted landing, and then crashed as it circled around for a second attempt.

Aircraft at El Obeid Airfield, Sudan

This Situation Report shows Sudan Armed Forces, or SAF, aircraft at El Obeid Airfield in North Kordofan state, Sudan. El Obeid is within striking range of the Nuba Mountains region of South Kordofan state, as well as refugee across the border in South Sudan.

Match Battalion: Confirmation of the Razing of Um Bartumbu Village, South Kordofan, Sudan

The Satellite Sentinel Project, or SSP, has released new satellite imagery confirming the intentional burning of Um Bartumbu village in Sudan’s conflict-torn border region of South Kordofan. SSP’s latest report, which also includes new eyewitness reports and photos embedded with GPS codes, solves the mystery of an undated cell phone video, which appeared to show a unit of Sudanese forces called the Match Battalion razing an unnamed village.

Escalation: Evidence of SAF and SPLA Combat Operations

New imagery confirms that the Government of Sudan has dramatically increased the number of military strike aircraft at two airbases and that many are in range to fly deep into South Sudan. SSP has also documented craters consistent with reports that Sudan Armed Forces, or SAF, aerially bombarded an apparent civilian area near a strategic bridge in Bentiu, the capital of Unity State, South Sudan.

Pipeline: Evidence of Destruction of Key Oil Infrastructure, Heglig

New imagery indicates that Sudan and South Sudan clashed over an oil field near the disputed border town of Heglig, a key part of the pipeline infrastructure was destroyed. The damage appears to be so severe, and in such a critical part of the oil infrastructure, that it would likely stop oil flow in the area.

Evidence consistent with aerial bombardment in progress

Plumes of grey smoke can be seen rising from the ground at two separate locations north of the village of Angarto, South Kordofan on 8 March 2012. One plume is visible 600 meters north and the other plume is visible 1.6 km/ 1 mi north of Angarto. In a second image captured six minutes later, fire is visible at one of the apparent impact sites.

In preparation for a final assault against the Nuba people who live in Sudan’s southern state of South Kordofan, the Sudanese Armed Forces has cut off the main evacuation routes for refugees fleeing areas already bombarded, has encircled the remaining local civilian population in the last rebel strongholds of the Nuba Mountains, and is building roads and lengthening the closest airstrip within striking range, according to new imagery....

Extension and Leveling of Talodi Airstrip

Based on satellite imagery of helicopter gunships, battle tanks, mechanized infantry units, and occupied artillery positions at the Kadugli airbase and SAF 14th Division headquarters in Kadugli,  SSP issued a human security alert for the Nuba Mountains region of South Kordofan, including the Kauda Valley.

The village of 'Amara, Blue Nile, Sudan was intentionally destroyed by Sudan Armed Forces. The imagery indicates a firefight apparently involving heavy armor or other tracked vehicles against dug-in fighting positions, uncontrolled burning of ground cover, the deliberate burning of individual structures consistent with civilian dwellings, and at least eight craters consistent with bombardment of the area by air-delivered ordnance.
